On Tuesday, November 4th, 2008, Steve Lin and I were present at SMS Rail Lines, 513 Sharptown Road, Logan Township, N.J. 08085 to record Baldwin Locomotives for our use in our line of sound decoders. The correct mailing address for SMS Rail Lines is:
SMS Rail Lines, P.O. Box 711, Bridgeport, N.J. 08014.
The following representatives from SMS Rail Lines were also present and were very accommodating to our needs:
Jeffrey L. Sutch – President SMS Rail Lines
Brian Murray – General Manager
Matt McGrath – Engineer of Loco # 9069
John Lex – Conductor Train Crew Loco # 9069
Dan Tomlinson – Brakeman Train Crew Loco # 9069
Also present were 4 unnamed mechanics who worked diligently for hours in the rain to get Loco # 554, a Baldwin AS-616 running for us to record. All the members of SMS are Model Railroaders and Railfans, and they all like to eat at the “Outback” chain of restaurants.
Brian Murray’s, Wife, recently, (2 weeks ago), gave birth to a baby girl, “Madison Murray”.
The following locomotives were recorded:
SLRS, {SMS} # 102, model # DS-4-4-7.5 [750 HP] a 6 cylinder normally aspirated 606na prime mover, with a Leslie 3 chime horn. This is the same prime mover also used in Baldwin model # S-8 switcher locomotives.
Pennsylvania, {SMS} # 9069, model # DS-4-4-10 [1000 HP] 6 cylinder turbocharged 606sc prime mover with a Westinghouse single chime, [GG-1 type], horn.
SMS # 554, model # AS-616 [1600 HP] 8 cylinder turbocharged 608a prime mover with a Nathan 5 chime horn. This is also the same prime mover used in Baldwin Sharknose locomotives, model # DR-6-4-20.
All three locomotives had 3 different and distinct bells which were also recorded. Also of note- Baldwin Locomotives use an “Air Throttle” to control motor RPM’s, and is not the typical notching sounds of other makes of locomotives, or presently being used in our sound decoders.
